ā ļøA dog protecting something they value.ā ļø
This behavior is called resource guarding, and itās a completely natural canine instinct. Dogs may guard things that are important to them like food, toys, bones, sleeping spaces, or even people.
Most of the time, dogs donāt want to bite. They just want the thing they value left alone, but when those signals are ignored or challenged, the situation can escalate!
Dogs may guard:
š¾ Food bowls
š¾ Bones or chews
š¾ Toys
š¾ Beds or resting spots
š¾ Found objects (socks, trash, etc.)
š¾ Their personal space (couches, rooms, beds etc)
š¾ Even their owner
Some dogs show very mild guarding behaviors, while others may be more intense depending on their history, genetics, or past experiences.
Before a bite occurs, most dogs will try to communicate that they donāt want something taken.
Common signals include:
⢠Freezing or stiffening over an item
⢠Lowering their head over the object
⢠Eating faster when someone approaches
⢠Side eye or āwhale eyeā
⢠Growling or showing teeth
These behaviors are not a dog being ādominantā or ābad.ā They are the dog saying: āPlease donāt take this from me.ā
š„ One of the most common mistakes people make is forcing the issue.
This can look like:
š« Pulling something directly out of the dogās mouth
š« Reaching into a food bowl
š« Taking away a chew while the dog is using it
š« Allowing kids to grab toys or bones from the dog
These situations can quickly create conflict and increase the likelihood of a bite. Instead of confrontation, focus on management and training.
Helpful strategies include:
ā Teaching a reliable ātradeā or ādrop itā cue
ā Trading high-value treats for objects
ā Feeding dogs in quiet areas away from foot traffic
ā Supervising children closely around dogs with toys or food
ā Removing items calmly rather than forcefully
Many resource guarding behaviors can be improved with positive training and consistency.
Dogs guarding valuable items are not trying to challenge their owners. They are simply responding to instinct and past experiences.
Because when we listen to what dogs are telling us, we can prevent the moment where they feel like they have no other choice but to escalate.

In addition to all of the information above, please ensure your dogs are wearing a current dog license.
Accidents happen and if a door, gate, etc is accidentally left open and your dog escapes, a valid dog license can decrease the amount of time your dog is loose and prevent them from being in a situation where a dog fight or bite to a human could occur.
Contact your local county dog warden for your license if you haven't already!!
