When Dog's Protect Things - Avery's Law

Valuable Info..... you are gonna want to read this šŸ‘‡šŸ»

This behavior is called resource guarding, and it’s a completely natural canine instinct. Dogs may guard things that are important to them like food, toys, bones, sleeping spaces, or even people.

Most of the time, dogs don’t want to bite. They just want the thing they value left alone, but when those signals are ignored or challenged, the situation can escalate!

Dogs may guard:

🐾 Food bowls

🐾 Bones or chews

🐾 Toys

🐾 Beds or resting spots

🐾 Found objects (socks, trash, etc.)

🐾 Their personal space (couches, rooms, beds etc)

🐾 Even their owner

Some dogs show very mild guarding behaviors, while others may be more intense depending on their history, genetics, or past experiences.

Before a bite occurs, most dogs will try to communicate that they don’t want something taken.

Common signals include:

• Freezing or stiffening over an item

• Lowering their head over the object

• Eating faster when someone approaches

• Side eye or ā€œwhale eyeā€

• Growling or showing teeth

These behaviors are not a dog being ā€œdominantā€ or ā€œbad.ā€ They are the dog saying: ā€œPlease don’t take this from me.ā€

šŸ’„ One of the most common mistakes people make is forcing the issue.

This can look like:

🚫 Pulling something directly out of the dog’s mouth

🚫 Reaching into a food bowl

🚫 Taking away a chew while the dog is using it

🚫 Allowing kids to grab toys or bones from the dog

These situations can quickly create conflict and increase the likelihood of a bite. Instead of confrontation, focus on management and training.

Helpful strategies include:

āœ” Teaching a reliable ā€œtradeā€ or ā€œdrop itā€ cue

āœ” Trading high-value treats for objects

āœ” Feeding dogs in quiet areas away from foot traffic

āœ” Supervising children closely around dogs with toys or food

āœ” Removing items calmly rather than forcefully

Many resource guarding behaviors can be improved with positive training and consistency.

Dogs guarding valuable items are not trying to challenge their owners. They are simply responding to instinct and past experiences.

Because when we listen to what dogs are telling us, we can prevent the moment where they feel like they have no other choice but to escalate.

In addition to all of the information above, please ensure your dogs are wearing a current dog license.

Accidents happen and if a door, gate, etc is accidentally left open and your dog escapes, a valid dog license can decrease the amount of time your dog is loose and prevent them from being in a situation where a dog fight or bite to a human could occur.

Contact your local county dog warden for your license if you haven't already!!
